Regional West Says Wear Red Friday for Heart Month

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb., – Heart disease, including stroke, is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. Every year, one in four deaths is caused by heart disease. It’s also the No. 1 killer of women in the United States, claiming more lives than all forms of cancer.

Regional West Medical Center’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program is using this month to raise awareness about heart disease and how people can prevent it – both at home and in the community. The Cardiac Rehab staff invites everyone to celebrate National Wear Red Day® on Friday, February 7 to raise awareness of heart disease in women and the importance of regular heart health check-ups.

The term “heart disease” refers to several types of heart conditions. The most common type in the United States is coronary heart disease (also called coronary artery disease), which occurs when a substance called plaque builds up in the arteries that supply blood to the heart. Coronary heart disease can cause heart attack, angina, heart failure, and arrhythmias.

The good news is heart disease can often be prevented when people make healthy choices and manage their health conditions. Communities, health professionals, and families can work together to create opportunities for people to make healthier choices.
