Scottsbluff Family Thankful for Regional West EMS’ Role in Preteen’s Recovery

“The morning of March 24, 2026, was the start of what felt like our world turning upside down. My son, Grayson, had what we thought was the flu, with generalized fever and just not feeling good. The next morning, I found him with stroke-like symptoms. Grayson had lost his ability to speak or move his right arm and leg. 

I initially thought I could get him in the car and to the hospital myself but soon knew I needed Regional West’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) right away. I was completely relieved when EMS walked into our home and I recognized each one of them, knowing they were going to take amazing care of our son. The crew was quick and calm with their assessments and got Grayson to the hospital quickly. I felt like they cared for him as if they were taking care of their own child. 

The Regional West Emergency Department team was amazing. Joe Margheim, MD, started medications right away and ordered a head CT to help Grayson and get him ready for transport. Air Link was dispatched and everyone was so caring, kind, and understanding of our situation. They allowed me to fly with our son and helped keep me calm during the flight. 

We were originally flown to Presbyterian St. Luke’s in Denver, but once they did an MRI, we were immediately transferred to Children’s Hospital Colorado for emergency brain surgery to remove a pocket of infection on the left side of Grayson’s brain. We were at Children’s Hospital for 23 days while he recovered and regained his speech and strength. 

The care we received starting at home with EMS to now, including the follow-ups with our pediatrician and therapists, has been nothing short of incredible. We will forever be grateful to each person who came into our lives during that time. Grayson is making a remarkable and full recovery. He was able to finish his 6th grade year at Bluffs Middle School and had fun on our family vacation.”
