Robby's story

On Sept. 15, 2014, Robby Peterson was in Sidney, Nebraska, loading cattle inside a chute when they stampeded. He was struck twice before hitting the ground and quickly curled into a fetal position when a cow stepped on the side of his face, breaking his jaw, as more cattle continued to trample him.

Robby was taken to Sidney Regional Medical Center and then transferred to Regional West via Air Link, where he underwent multiple surgeries and a stay in the intensive care unit (ICU). His recollection of his stay is patchy, but he still remembered Jina Nemnich, ACNP-BC, whose care during surgery and beyond left a lasting impression. He also fondly remembered Air Link Chief Flight Nurse Tracy Meyer, RN, BSN, CFRN, NRP, who cared for him during his flight and checked on him in the days to follow.

Recently, Robby reached out to Jina through social media to let her know he was coming through town and wanted to stop at Regional West to thank some of the people who were involved in his healing. Jina then contacted Trauma Program Manager Susan Wilson, RN, BSN, who coordinated a visit.

“When Robby shared that he has thought about us for 11 years, I was speechless. I feel very fortunate to have been a part of his care. His journey back to Regional West is a great example of the impact that we get to make in patients’ lives daily,” said Nemnich.

Eleven years later, Robby looked back on his journey and expressed deep gratitude for the care he received at Regional West.

“This accident definitely changed my life, but I know things happen for a reason,” he said.
