SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb., ― Cardiovascular diseases such as heart disease and stroke are among the most widespread health problems in the United States, and heart disease ranks as the leading cause of death.

During American Heart Health Month in February, Regional West’s Cardiology and Cardiac Rehabilitation departments are raising awareness about heart disease and how to prevent it.

The term “heart disease” can refer to several types of heart conditions. The most common in the United States is coronary heart disease, or coronary artery disease, which occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries that supply blood to the heart. Coronary heart disease can cause heart attack, angina, heart failure and arrhythmias.

Contributing factors to heart disease include high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and smoking.

Fortunately, making healthy choices and managing health conditions can often help prevent heart disease. Start with an annual physical, stay physically active, eat a healthy diet, stay well hydrated, and get plenty of sleep.
