Quit Nicotine Now Program Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Quit Nicotine Now Program work?
When you decide the time is right to stop using nicotine, or your provider suggests nicotine cessation counseling, you will be referred to Abbie Fulk, APRN, for an initial visit.

You will have an initial appointment with Abbie where she will review paperwork and go over your personalized stop using nicotine plan with you. She may prescribe nicotine replacement therapy and/or medication, if appropriate, and you will also be introduced to the Nebraska Quit Line.

You will have a follow-up appointment with Abbie a week to 10 days later, which is a chance to review how the plan is working, assess medication effectiveness, and adjust the plan if necessary.

If needed, a third appointment can be scheduled six months after your initial appointment.

Is the program covered by insurance?
Every insurance plan covers nicotine cessation differently; please check with your insurance carrier. Medicare allows eight visits a year, with four visits every six months. Medicaid allows four visits a year.

Patients will also receive a referral to the Nebraska Quit Line, which offers free, 24/7 access to counseling and support services during the process.

What kind of help can I expect to receive?

  • One-on-one counseling.
  • Education on how to safely and effectively stop using nicotine for good.
  • Depending on individual needs, there are a number of aides designed to help curb nicotine cravings and eliminate using nicotine as part of your life. These aides help ease cravings and withdrawal symptoms and rarely cause serious side effects or addiction. These products do not have the unhealthy substances present in cigarettes, such as tar and carbon monoxide.
  • You will not see your primary care provider during your nicotine cessation visit, but medication changes, etc. will be posted in your medical record.
