National Trauma Awareness Month Focuses on “Safe Steps for Seniors”

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb., – One-third of Americans aged 65 and over fall each year and one out of five falls causes a serious injury, such as broken bones or a head injury. Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older Americans. However, falling is not an inevitable result of aging. Through practical lifestyle adjustments, prevention programs, and community partnerships, the number of falls among seniors can be substantially reduced.

In May, Regional West Trauma Services will join other trauma agencies in focusing on “Safe Steps for Seniors” during National Trauma Awareness Month. This May marks the 28th anniversary of National Trauma Awareness Month, which is organized by the American Trauma Society in collaboration with the Society of Trauma Nurses.

Regional West Community Health, in partnership by the Scotts Bluff County Health Department, offers a 12-week program called “Stepping On.” “Stepping On” is an evidence-based prevention program that meets once a week. It teaches seniors and those who are at a higher risk for falling how to spot risks, make their homes safer, and how to use regular activity to improve balance and coordination. A new class is beginning May 17 and there are openings for seniors available.

If you would like more information or would like to register for the May 17 class of “Stepping On,” or would like Regional West Trauma Services Injury Prevention to speak about preventing falls to your civic event, school, church group, or other organization, contact Holly Johnston at 308-630-1584 or email Holly.Johnston@rwhs.org.
